Lens Materials
Ophthalmic lens materials have progressed very rapidly in just a few years. Lenses of this generation have the ability to be thin, lightweight, and durable simultaneously. Some lens materials provide are impact resistance, others have natural UV protection. |
Use this short summary to help you remember the advantages of each lens material:
Glass - the standard years ago, these lenses are rarely used today. While they provide unsurpassed scratch resistance, their risk and potential damage if breakage outweighs its benefits. If scratch resistance is a feature you require, see the description to the right of an anti-reflection coat.
Plastic -for the cost-conscious patient, plastic lenses may be your best option. Lens weight is considerably less than the weight of a glass lens.
Polycarbonate - impact resistant and providing UV protection, these lenses are the standard for children and active individuals. These lenses also further decrease lens weight and thickness. When combined with an anti-reflective coating, these are some of the most functional and cosmetically appealling lens materials on the market.
Trivex - a relatively new material, Trivex provides all the benefits of polycarbonate, but with improved color redition and better strength. These lenses are terrific for rimless or drill mount frames (frame types without a full wire frame)
High Index - these lenses bend light more efficiently so that these lenses are as thin and light as possible. High Index lenses are perfect for high prescriptions - both nearsightedness and farsightedness.
Lens Features
In addition the material your glasses lenses are made from, there are numerous additional features that could improve the appearance and performance of your new glasses. Just a few of your options are listed below.
Anti-Reflection Coat - reduce eyestrain and discomfort from computers and overhead lights, while providing a better cosmetic appearance and easier eye contact. Top of the line anti-glare coatings also provide exceptional scratch resistance.
Photochromic - better known by their brand name of "Transitions," these lenses darken in sunlight and return to normal color indoors. These are terrific for individuals who prefer to meet their need for sunglasses and UV protection in their everyday pair of glasses.
Drivewear - think of these lenses as photochromic lenses designed specifically for use behind the wheel. The tint varies based on outdoor conditions (such as bright sunlight or overcast days) to maximize contrast and improve your vision while driving.
Polarized Sunglasses - cut down glare outdoors so your eyes are more comfortable and you see better. These lenses contain a special filter that ensures only the proper (non-reflected) light reaches your eye. A must for fisherman, boaters, bikers, golfers, and those who are very light sensitive!
Progressive "No-Line" Lenses - allows patients needing reading glasses or bifocals to achieve more natural vision at all distances and ranges, while eliminating that not-so-appealing line in their bifocal lenses.
