Amblyopia (or "lazy eye") is the most
preventable cause of vision loss in our country. Amblyopia is an
underdeveloped communication pathway between the eye and brain that is
caused by an eye turn or high prescription. By detecting these
possible causes of lazy eye very early, we can re-establish the
eye-to-brain pathway.
There is a limited
amount of time this pathway can be rebuilt before permanent
damage results. Early detection is critical to prevent permanent
vision loss.
Dr. Baker prefers to see infant's between 9 and 10 months old. He believes this is the best age to evaluate a baby's visual development. Neurologic connections from the eye to the brain are still early in development and can be treated if necessary. |
